I have found myself quite disappointed with what I have heard and seen in the behaviour of members of Catholic schools on all levels – and also in some cases I have been incredibly pleasantly surprised by what I have seen, heard or experienced myself. I am starting to realise that it is not the ‘state of Catholic Education’ I should be concerned with: it is actually the state of the world.
For example, Our daughter was recently upset at school as Daddy is in hospital and she misses him, things at home have been difficult and she came home delighted that her teacher spoke to her about guardian angels and how important her prayers are, and that when she prays she can ask the heavenly court to be at her fathers bedside and send her gaurdian angel to comfort him when she cant be there. This is something we teach at home, and I was delighted to hear this and see the joy in our daughters face as she spoke with me about her discussion with her teacher.
“Education is integral to the mission of the Church to proclaim the good news. First and foremost every Catholic educational institution is a place to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”
Often, I am shocked by things our daughter has told me about playground discussions and probably am a thorn in the school’s side about this – but the more I think about it, whilst the school need to be aware of what is happening or being said to the children, by their peers and incidents should always be reported so that the school can take action, and know what is needing attention; ultimately we are dealing with a world that far exceeds many of our imaginations, perhaps I am naive. Perhaps actual practising Catholic Parents who pray with their children and teach them their faith are in a far greater minority than we have ever imagined.
“The Second Key reason why the Church provides Catholic Schools is to assist parents in the education and religious formation of their Children:”Since parents have given children their life, they are bound by the most serious obligation to educate their offspring and therefore must be recognised as the primary and principal educators. This role in education is so important that only with difficulty can it be supplied where it is lacking.”
So if the parents are lacking in faith or do not acknowledge their duty to be the principal educators of their children, particularly in terms of Faith this world starts to win the battle; and as I have seen with my own eyes and we all see on a daily basis what our children face from this world is far more dangerous than what we faced: between television, mobile phones, internet and a general lack of personal responsibility in the world, this have all and dont care about the consequences attitude many have – surely the consequences are becoming clear now!?
I want to really applaud Catholic teachers for their bravery, in taking on the challenge of bringing Christ to the Centre; in a world where he is being pushed further and further from it. I want to beg Catholic and Christian parents to step up to the responsibility they have as parents and people of faith to focus on the souls and the innocence of our children.
I beg our Priests and religious to be brave and speak out about the injustice that our Children are recieving in this world, the fact that their innocence and childhoods are being removed by the media, the lack of parental responsibility and personal responsibility really makes my heart cry.
Please please pray for the souls of all of Our Children, dont be so harsh on young people, love them – you see a far better result.
So as Our daughter embarks in August on the next stage of her education at a Catholic Secondary School, our most important focus will be her soul, to teach her also that to work is to pray (a constant mantra in my own head) and that when you are focussed on the eternal goal rather than the worldly goal, Gods beautiful plan for you will unfold just as he wants it to.
Any comments or suggestions are welcomed as to how we can start a Christian Parenting revolution – that loves and prioritises the souls of our children over anything else…. is there anywhere already running in the UK that teaches parents and enables them to teach their children the faith?
