Madonna and Child, Troy Edkins – 24 x 20”
“Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself has a certain obligation: to know that he cannot waste this talent, but must develop it.” Blessed Pope John Paul II
This painting makes my heart melt and my soul sing at the same time. There are two reasons for this:
- It truly captures a tender moment between a mother and her son
- It has been created by an artist who loves Jesus and paints from his heart and soul, with a gift he has been entrusted to him by God. It has been created for His glory.
At first explaining why seemed like an incredibly daunting task to me but having happened upon Pope John Paul II, 1999, letter to artists I realised that when we use our gifts, and work for God’s greater glory (their intended purpose) we create the finest masterpieces. “Orare est laborare, laborare est orare.”
“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Gn 1:31)
This original artwork indeed captures peace and serenity, capturing the very essence of the human relationship between mother and Child, so beautifully demonstrated in perfection by our Blessed Mother and Christ Jesus our Lord. This Madonna and Child Bringing to life the amazing love God has for us in the gift of His Son, God made man. The Humanly Divine as a tiny baby cradled in the arms of His mother.
“Mary Pondered all these things in her heart” Luke 2:19
The look encapsulates in a contemplative manner the way Mary would have looked upon her son many times in his lifetime. A beautiful reminder that even our Saviour required the tenderness only a mother can give, and of the importance of His mothers love.
I have been especially struck by my own love of this painting, as for me when I think about how much God loves us, I often think of the Cross, the crucifixion of Our Lord, imagine loving someone so much you give them your only Son? That is amazing! I don’t think so much of Jesus as an infant, so it surprises me that this Painting encapsulates for me the Love of God, and also the huge gift we were given by Christ on the Cross, His Mother. His mother that nursed him, clothed him, loved him and even scolded him, along with St Joseph, she brought Our Saviour up! AMAZING! God gave us His only Son, and his Mother all at the same time.
As we approach the season of Advent, our hearts and minds are drawn to a different person of Christ, The Infant, who was loved so tenderly by His Mother. It made me realise that all the things we do for our own children, the Blessed Mother did so much more perfectly for Jesus. To see such an intimate moment of Perfect Love and tenderness so beautifully captured in this original artwork, can only make my soul sing with Joy that we are so loved by God.
This Painting is currently for sale, and I am praying that she will find a wonderful home. I think she would make an excellent gift, and addition to any home or Parish. She has clearly been painted with great devotion and attention to detail and I can imagine many will be moved by the sight of this lovely painting. My prayer is that she finds the right buyer and that all that see this Madonna and child are brought in a special way closer to Christ and his Mother.
