  2. A Conversion Story - Cory Shay

    Posted on

In a world where social media can bring us down or be truly inspirational, Beads with Faith are seeking out inspirational Catholics and showcasing their stories or ministries in our Guest Blogs section! We are delighted to have found Cory Shay, an inspirational Protestant Convert to Catholicism! I believe it is truly important that we share our stories of how Christ has touched our lives, and where we are with our Faith so that we can inspire and help others on their journey!

    Cory Shay - Conversion Story

Here is the story of my conversion.

It was my senior year of college, 1998-1999, and I was really struggling spiritually.  I had been a Protestant, but what the Protestants taught and practice was not really sitting well with me.  Plus, there was some issues in my old church, and I sought God on my own.  My Senior year in college I realized, there was only so much I could do.  I knew I needed to find a church again.  However, I did not care to go back to Protestant Churches (since I left my old church, I went to others, and just the things I saw and heard left me scratching my head. for example, I was at a church and the sermon was on what colors to paint the walls).
  3. Mary as a Model Disciple - Andy Drozdziak

And she sits inside the starlight/Knowing that He is a king/But to her he’s still her baby/ And she looks upon her King now/And she worries for her son.

-And She Worries For Her Son by Carol Barrington and Larry Hogan, 1975

As a teenager, a friend shared that she had seen a picture of Mary in her mind. This picture was slightly unusual, because Mary was trying to get out of the way! She was pointing to someone else-her Son, Jesus. This remains for me a reminder of Mary’s role: to show us the way to Jesus. Mary’s humanity shines through for me. She is the mother who “worries for her son” and who puts her faith in God-even when she does not really understand what is happening.

  4. Veritas Outreach

I have been really working at finding out about some wonderful ministries working for Jesus to spread the Good News, and be the Hands and Feet of Jesus in the world! I came across Veritas on instagram and was really in awe of the work they are doing! If we could all work together like this the world would be such a beautiful place! Here we hear from Gary VanHorn, Executive Director, Veritas Outreach

Veritas Outreach is a street-level ministry that feeds, cloths and ministers to homeless folks wherever we find them. We collect donations of food, clothes, water, small amounts of cash, propane, tents, sleeping bags, and just about any gear we can get our hands on. We deliver all of these donated items to people who are living in the most heartbreaking conditions, such as abandoned cars, tents, cardboard shacks, you can only imagine. Tent cities are a growing phenomenon in almost every major city these days.
